The TEN Word of the Day is Entertaiment

Something affording pleasure, diversion, or amusement: playing games; solving the daily crossword puzzle; attending a musical or dramatic performance. Entertainments may also have a serious purpose, as in the case of ceremonies, festivals or satire. Some skills that were once necessary, such as cooking or hunting, have developed into sports for amateurs and professionals and are staged as competitions for global audiences. Entertainments can be adapted to suit any scale, from an individual who chooses his or her own private entertainment from a wide range of pre-recorded products, to a banquet arranged for two; or to performances intended for thousands.

The word entertainment is from the Medieval Latin intertenere, formed with the prefix inter meaning “inside” and the suffix tenere, from the Indo-European root ten, meaning to hold or stretch out.
