Daily News

Founded in 1919 as Illustrated Daily News, The Daily News is one of the oldest and most successful tabloid newspapers in the United States. It has a circulation of more than 200,000 copies and is based in Jersey City, NJ. In addition to its national and international news coverage, The Daily News also publishes niche publications dedicated to New York State’s Hudson Valley, North Country, and North Coast regions, as well as local news and agriculture. Its staff has won multiple awards for writing, photography, and advertising.

The Daily News was a pioneer in the tabloid format, and was one of the first newspapers in the United States to publish a daily tabloid edition. It reached peak circulation in 1947 at 2.4 million copies a day. During its peak, The Daily News was ranked as the number one daily newspaper in the country. It is still one of the top-selling newspapers in the country, with a circulation of more than 200,000 copies by 2016.

During the 1940s and ’50s, The Daily News espoused a conservative populism, and was a major contributor to the anti-communist movement during World War II. By the 1960s, the Daily News’s editorial position had shifted to a more moderate, liberal stance. The paper was a popular alternative to the right-wing New York Post, and the Daily News won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2017.

The Daily News was founded by Samuel Mix and Malcolm D. Mix, who were brothers. The Daily News also served as a model for the tabloid in the 1994 movie, “The Paper.” When the newsroom was being remodeled, dozens of Daily News mainstays sat on the bench in the lobby. Some of the most notable Daily News reporters sat on the bench: Bob York, Jimmy Cannon, Dick Young, and Bill Gallo.

In 1995, the Daily News was moved from its former headquarters on East 42nd Street to another location on West 33rd Street. In that same year, the paper announced it would be sold to Tribune Publishing. At that time, the newsroom staff was cut in half. The paper also announced the closure of four other Tribune newspapers.

In 2017, The Daily News was purchased by Tribune Publishing for $1. The paper became a part of the company, which also owns The Orlando Sentinel, The Daily Record, The Tampa Tribune, The Daily News, and The Morning Call in Allentown, Pa. The News also owns WPIX, a television station. The radio station is now owned by CBS Radio. In addition to the newspaper, The Daily News Online is the most comprehensive news website in the United States.
