The New York Daily News is an American newspaper founded in 1919, the first tabloid paper to be printed in the United States. It is based in New York City and is owned by Tronc, Inc. The Daily News is one of the most widely distributed papers in the United States and has won numerous awards for its journalism.

The Daily News is also known for its intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics and a strong sports section. It has also been credited with being the first newspaper to use photography in its reporting, with some of its earliest photographs appearing on the front page in 1921. It was the most-read newspaper in the world during its heyday as a tabloid in the mid-to-late twentieth century, but its circulation has declined since then.

While it often skews left in its politics and is sometimes criticized for not having enough facts to balance the bold headlines, it is still a legitimate source of news and information for many people. It is often compared to its crosstown rival, the New York Post, with both newspapers taking on political crusades that may not help them maintain their reputation for objectivity.

In recent years, the paper has developed a liberal tone partly in response to the conservative polemics of its crosstown rival. It is not always successful in balancing the two voices, but its liberal voice is usually more balanced than that of the Post.
